I can’t tell you how easy it is to aspire to do more, yet not follow through. Whether it is working out, reading, getting to know people, growing in your Christian faith, restoring connections, or fighting against sexual addiction, it is so easy to talk about it, but never do anything. If that resonates with you, then you understand the nature of sexual behaviors.
Those struggling with sexual behaviors often know how to talk—but struggle to walk out their healing journey. Why is this the case? How do you go from a talker to a walker when porn addiction is strong in you?
Christian Counseling Insight: People Have Allegiances
Everyone has allegiances in their life. They are the things that you are committed to when push comes to shove. They are the things that you say yes most often to. They are the things you protect by saying no to other things. Whether it’s people-pleasing, comfort, reputation, success, performance, marriage, family, etc., all of us have allegiances. Not all of them are bad in themselves, but they could be in the wrong order of loves.
Struggling with porn addiction is no different, except that their allegiances are trapped in the sexual addiction. Sexual addiction has a hold of them, and they are committed to it. They give up their time, emotional intimacy, finances, and even good things in their lives to keep it going. Of course, they’re miserable doing it, but they still do it.
Christian Counseling: Pornography Addiction and Recovery
Struggling addicts can’t grow out of their allegiance to pornography addiction unless they commit to something else—something better and worthy of their allegiance. Once you find it, you must commit to it through time, energy, and if necessary, finances.
You can’t grow without commitment, and your allegiances will never change without it. Pornography addiction is no different, as your commitment must be displayed to break the cycle. Things like internet filters, recovery groups, spiritual disciplines, marriage counseling, and practicing recovery tools display your commitment. They also need to confess sin to others and not just the sin of lust (James 5:16).
Even though you may do this, it is still easy to be going through the motions while not being convinced that a life without pornography addiction is better than life with it. It is easy to talk, but it is harder to commit. Paul displays this through his actions when he writes:
“But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus” (Phil. 3:13–14).
What do you give your allegiances to—and why do you give them your commitment? What can you commit to in order to cultivate new allegiances that are pulling you away from your walk with Jesus Christ?
Christian Counseling Insight: The Need for Recovery Groups
Pornography addiction can be so blinding and confusing that you lack any self-awareness. Pornography addiction can make it so hard to answer these questions yourself, and this is why God has given us His Holy Spirit through His people to help us (Matthew 18:20). These people can help you grow in understanding Jesus’ love for you, apply biblical standards, and grow in biblical knowledge, as the truth will set you free (John 8:32). Christian community helps us break our allegiances and recommit to the right ones.
There are many places to find groups through the local church, Celebrate Recovery, Hope is Alive, Focus on the Family, Regen, 12-step programs, and Pure Life Ministries. These groups can help with sexual temptation so you do not feel like the Rogue Christian—trying to do it all on your own with no community of support. They can also connect you with a Christian counselor who can help you with recovery tools and counseling resources. A Christian counselor can help you get the ball rolling more quickly through their expert guidance.
